6 1/4″ Green Plastic Drone Comb

$4.75

Our single-piece plastic frame and foundation are crafted with a larger cell size to encourage bees to create drone comb. To support your Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy for Varroa mites, insert one drone frame into each hive.

Once the bees have capped the drone cells, remove the frame and seal it in a plastic bag before placing it in the freezer overnight. After freezing, allow the frame to return to room temperature. Use a capping scratcher to open the cells, then return the frame to the hive so worker bees can clean out the dead drones and mites. Continue this process as the bees refill and cap the cells again.

Description

How the Green Plastic Drone Comb Aids in Varroa Mite Management

A green plastic drone comb is a specialized beehive component designed to promote the production of drone bees. These combs are particularly attractive to Varroa mites because the larger size of drone cells makes them an ideal environment for the mites to reproduce.

When worker bees cap the drone cells containing larvae, you can remove the entire comb section and either destroy it or freeze it for up to 48 hours. This process kills both the mites and the drone larvae inside. After thawing and uncapping the comb, you can return it to the hive for the bees to clean and reuse.

Incorporating green plastic drone comb into your integrated pest management strategy is an effective way to help control Varroa mite populations. The comb is called “green plastic” simply because of its material and color. This method provides a cost-effective, chemical-free approach to reducing mite levels in your hives.

As the bees repopulate the drone comb, repeat the removal and freezing process as needed. Some beekeepers also choose to simply cut out and discard the drone comb, since maintaining a large number of drone bees is unnecessary for most colonies.

Tip: Using deeper hive bodies can be beneficial, as bees tend to construct drone comb frames toward the lower sections of the hive.
