These workshops aims to improve the confidence and competence of the beekeeper. This is not a one size fit all course – we will not be teaching specific manipulations – but we will teach best beekeeping practice and a number of underlying skills that every beekeeper should know, such as queen finding, splitting a hive, swarm management and hive manipulations of large colonies and difficult colonies, disease inspection, and colony destruction. Hands-on activities are key to these workshops, as is discussion of planning, options, and contingencies.
This workshop includes hands-on training on a number of important topics related to beekeeping, including opening and inspecting the colonies. spliting a hive, swarm prevention and caputure. In this workshop we will show best beekeeping practices in hive management and everything that you should be doing as a beekeeper in PNW.
CAUTION: As you will be working around live honeybee colonies, please remember to wear light-colored and smooth-textured clothing, as dark-colored, textured and woolly clothing can aggravate the bees. Please refrain from using perfume or hair gel and keep jewelry to a minimum. Warmer weather means more active bees! We strongly encourage attendees to bring whatever beekeeping protective clothing that you fgeel comfortable in.
Whether you are completely new to beekeeping or already have a few years as an apiarist under your belt, you will gain valuable insights from our experienced instructors and their combined knowledge.
